Tell us what you are afterHow England came to make it
- 15th centuryHopped beer arrives from the Low Countries
- 1690The Distilling Act opens grain spirit to anyone
- 2006The first English malt distillery in over a century opens
England's long suit is brewing rather than distilling. Ale was made without hops for centuries and was closer to a food than a luxury. Hopped beer arrived from the Low Countries in the fifteenth century and was resisted for a generation before it took over, because hops kept a barrel sound for far longer.
Spirits came in on politics. After 1688 the crown favoured domestic grain spirit over imported French brandy, and the Distilling Act of 1690 opened production to anyone who wanted it, which produced both the gin trade and the disorder that followed. English single malt is a modern revival: the first distillery in over a century opened in Norfolk in 2006, which is why an English malt here is decades younger than its Scottish neighbours and priced accordingly.
